Port left to rue its lack of polish

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 15 Juni 2014 | 18.35

PORT Adelaide returned home from Sydney on Saturday night having reaffirmed it has the ability to win a premiership this season but with a valuable lesson on what it will take to win against the AFL's elite.

Jacobs happy his tall order achieved

Adelaide have stayed in touch with the eight with an upset victory over North Melbourne.

IN every team contest there is a battle that defines the result. In Adelaide-North Melbourne games, it is the duel between lead ruckmen Sam Jacobs (Crows) and Todd Goldstein (Kangaroos).

A year after Jacobs was subbed out of a losing battle with Goldstein at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, the sixth head-to-head confrontation between the imposing ruckmen ended in the South Australian's favour.

By the Champion Data statistics, Jacobs and Goldstein locked pride and horns together for 92 minutes at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night. Jacobs won the disposal count 16-8 while proving to be far more effective in field play than Goldstein. Jacobs also won the centre hit-out count 14-10 ensuring the Crows had critical first look at the ball for centre clearances, six of which were attributed to Adelaide midfielder Patrick Dangerfield.

Jacobs has scored a victory against his supposed nemesis.

"I have no idea who came out on top," Jacobs told The Advertiser at the end of Adelaide's 36-point win. Be it modesty or not, at least Jacobs was not beating himself up in the belief he had failed against Goldstein.

"If I won the centre clearances, that is good because that is an important part of the game — getting the ball going forward. And even better for us is how, after getting it out of the centre square, we locked the ball in our forward half."

The Jacobs-Goldstein storyline is growing. "And it definitely, definitely (motivates me)," Jacobs said.

"When I was drafted (to Carlton in the 2006 national rookie draft) there was a good group (of ruckmen) coming through. Matthew Lobbe is doing well at Port Adelaide. Add Goldstein and Robert Warnock and Matthew Kruezer who used to be my teammates (at Carlton) and Matty Leuenberger (at Brisbane) ... the list goes on and we have all been in the system for eight years and I love the challenge of coming up against them."

Jacobs scored himself as more effective across field play in the first half than second.

"Taking a few contested marks early on probably gave me the nudge in the first half, but you know with Goldy that he will keep coming and make for a pretty good battle," Jacobs said. "It sounds a bit in-depth, but Goldstein has longer arms than you think. Sometimes you think you have him beaten, but he just finds that little bit extra to get there. He is a very strong player, but the interesting thing is a lot of our attributes are pretty similar.

"I see a lot of the way in how I play in the way he goes about it as well."

Beyond the memory of how Goldstein has troubled him, Jacobs also carried during the week the personal burden of needing to respond for underperforming against the AFL's biggest player, Fremantle ruckman Aaron Sandilands six days earlier in Perth.

"I don't want to talk too much about last week when I was unable to match it with Sandilands, but the lesson from that was controlling the air with contested marks and giving our midfielders first use," said Jacobs after beating Goldstein 2-1 on contested marks.

Help us, Stephen: Little

Former Essendon midfielder Mark McVeigh is seriously concerned about the welfare of his old teammates and believes it'll be 'nearly impossible' for them to perform against Melbourne tomorrow.

"The CEO of ASADA has used the media irresponsibly by intimidating and attempting to negotiate with our players." - Paul Little Picture: Wayne Ludbey Source: News Corp Australia

ESSENDON chairman Paul Little has urged biochemist Stephen Dank to come forward to help the club.

Bombers chairman Paul Little is unhappy with ASADA's timing. Picture: Wayne Ludbey Source: News Corp Australia

Little said on Sunday no Essendon player would accept ASADA boss Ben McDevitt's offer of a six-month ban. He said Dons players had lost all faith in the process.

He said those players who gave honest testimony about the supplements regime — without conceding they did take thymosin beta 4 — were now the players with show-cause notices.

EMOTIONAL 'BOMBER' CALLS ON FANS SUPPORT

Little said Essendon never signed up to the joint investigation believing it would take 16 months, leak constantly and give Essendon no feedback about its progress.

But while former Dons biochemist Dank continues to ignore his ASADA show-cause notice, Little said he could help the club.

"I think Stephen Dank needs to become a part of this process, whether it's via ASADA or in some other way,'' he said.

Former Essendon midfielder Mark McVeigh is seriously concerned about the welfare of his old teammates and believes it'll be 'nearly impossible' for them to perform against Melbourne tomorrow.

"There is too much knowledge he knows that we don't know. He could help bring greater clarity to what is a very difficult set of circumstances."

Part of ASADA's alleged evidence against the Bombers is texts and emails from Dank that refer specially to the prohibited drug thymosin beta 4, with Dank also talking about it in a media interview.

WHAT GILLON MCLACHLAN HAS LEARNED FROM BOMBERS MESS

Hird said yesterday in his chairman's address and an ABC interview Essendon had asked but been rejected in a request for show-cause notices to be served after yesterday's game, not last Thursday.

Little does not have issue with James Hird joining the club's Federal Court action, which seeks a permanent stay on the ASADA-AFL investigation.

"We have told him to toe the party line and I believe he's been doing that. The club felt very strongly it now needed to take the action in needed and so did James."

Essendon players are resolute that they will not accept six-month suspensions, in part because of ASADA's conduct in the player interviews.

Hundreds of fans turn out to watch the Bombers train in a show of support after 34 Essendon players were issued show-cause notices by ASADA

A raft of players gave vague answers about their use of drugs like thymosin and AOD-9604 and then were alarmed when ASADA alleged they had confessed, with those names eventually published.

"All I can say is that during the investigation, during the interviews the players that have just said 'I could have taken it but I don't know whether it was from this bottle, that bottle or some other bottle, whether it was illegal, legal or what it was', the players that have gone in with an absolutely honest and open response to those sorts of questions are the ones that have now been targeted."

34 Bombers hit with doping notices

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 12 Juni 2014 | 18.35

AFL 360 panellists Gerard Whateley and Dermott Brereton discuss the repercussions of the show-cause notices handed to Essendon by ASADA.

THIRTY-FOUR Essendon players have been sensationally slapped with legal notices ordering them to show why they should not be cited for doping.

The Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority informed the players they had a case to answer over the club's 2012 supplements program.

ASADA notified the players by text message and instructed them to call the anti-doping body for details about the action being taken against them.

TIMELINE: HOW THE DRUGS SAGA HAS UNFOLDED

Fox Sports AFL correspondent Julian de Stoop discusses the processes involved for Essendon after reports emerged some players had been issued show cause notices by ASADA over the 2012 suuplements scandal.

ASADA INQUIRY: WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

MORE: BOMBERS LOOKING FORWARD TO HIRD'S RETURN

The dramatic move, which follows a 16-month probe, throws the 2014 AFL season into turmoil.

But Essendon could launch a counter-attack on Friday by seeking a declaration in the Federal Court that the joint AFL-Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority investigation was unlawful.

The pre-emptive court challenge would aim to stop the ASADA action — and any sanctions against players and club staff — in its tracks.

Essendon players have been issued with show cause notices for doping, according to the Herald Sun, 16 months after the probe into the Bombers 2012 supplements program began.

ASADA's case against the players is believed to centre on the use of the peptide Thymosin Beta-4 — a substance banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Players would face bans of up to two years if found guilty of taking prohibited substances.

Essendon chairman Paul Little is in crisis talks with club officials. He is believed to be shattered by the latest development in the long-running saga and will address the media on Friday.

The club issued a statement at 7.27pm saying it is "not in a position to comment on any matter relating to its players and the ASADA investigation".

"The club will continue to act in the best of interest of its players and respect the integrity and confidentiality of this process," the statement said.

The Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority served show-cause notices on Essendon players this afternoon over the club's 2012 supplements program.

Bombers legend Tim Watson, the father of club captain and 2012 Brownlow medallist Jobe Watson, said the players were "shocked" by the latest development.

He indicated Essendon would launch a legal challenge.

"The new AFL CEO, Gill McLachlan, told the CEOs and presidents only last week that they should start preparing themselves for what could be a very bumpy ride," Watson said.

"I think today's news, though, that the players have received show cause notices, would have had a real shock."

McLachlan told the Herald Sun: "I can't comment."

AFL boss Gillon Mclachlan is yet to speak about how the AFL intends to respond to the development. Picture: David Caird.

It's unclear whether show cause notices had been served on players who had left the club since the 2012 season and are now playing at other AFL clubs.

Any charges against Essendon players and officials would ultimately be heard by an AFL tribunal.

Essendon players and their lawyers will have 10 days to respond to the show cause notices by providing reasons why ASADA should not proceed.

ASADA has been investigating what Essendon-appointed investigator Ziggy Switkowski described as "a disturbing picture of a pharmacologically experimental environment never adequately controlled or challenged or documented within the club".

Co-operation between ASADA and AFL chiefs ceased last year after an interim report was used as the basis for heavy governance sanctions handed to Essendon and officials, including suspended coach James Hird.

The Essendon Bombers' season appears in disarray after 34 players - yet were issued with show cause notices over the controversial 2012 drugs scandal. Picture: Toby Zerna

Little said in a statement published on the club's website before the show-cause notices were issued: "I can confirm we are exploring all legal options for our players in the unlikely event they receive show cause letters from ASADA — we make no apologies for that."

ASADA has already issued a show cause notice to Essendon's former sports scientist, Stephen Dank, and could yet issue them against other support staff.

Essendon's first legal challenge could be to call on ASADA to show proof of the evidence it has supporting a doping violation.

Lawyers could also argue a defence of "no fault" or negligence, claiming the players had no knowledge of substances administered to them during 2012.

The Essendon scandal erupted on February 5 last year when the Bombers "self-reported" to the AFL and ASADA and asked to be investigated.

Betting giant TAB has suspended betting on Essendon playing in the finals.

Pies clear Dane Swan over ‘Gatto link’

Eddie McGuire said he will "chat" to Dane Swan about the event attended by Mick Gatto. Source: News Corp Australia

COLLINGWOOD boss Gary Pert says Dane Swan did not deceive the club over his attendance at a fundraising event with links to former underworld figure Mick Gatto.

Swan was the star attraction at a $200-a-head dinner attended by 50 people on Tuesday at Gatto Nero, a Coburg pizza restaurant majority-owned by Gatto's brother John, Fairfax Media reports.

Mick Gatto and several of his friends attended the event.

TITUS O'REILY: AFL reveals cunning plan to make players behave

The Pies have no issues with Swan's attendance, and have spoken to the AFL multiple times in the last 24 hours to assure the league there are no concerns.

Collingwood president Eddie McGuire has also brushed aside Fairfax's report.

There were reports that Swan had told the club his manager Liam Pickering had booked the event - but that Pickering actually had no idea.

But Pert said the Brownlow Medallist had events manager Scott McConville as well as business manager Pickering.

Gary Pert and Eddie McGuire both say Dane Swan has done nothing wrong. Source: Getty Images

He said Swan had not misinformed the club in any way - he had told them it was booked by his agent, and he had little idea who would be at the event.

"We are very comfortable with the speaking engagements Dane Swan does at multiple venues,'' he told the Herald Sun.

"Scott McConville is his speaking manager and he booked it. By all reports those events are very well attended and successful events.

"Swanny gives his time signing autographs with Collingwood fans and families and we have never had an issue with them."

The AFL has warned players and clubs not to associate with underworld figures out of concern organised crime could infiltrate the game.

However it seems unlikely the AFL will act on the issue given it was vastly different to Richmond player Jake King's ongoing friendship with ex-bikie boss Toby Mitchell.

King brought Mitchell into the Richmond rooms last year, with the AFL strongly recommending he cut ties with Mitchell.

McGuire told Southern Cross Austereo it wasn't surprising Swan knew some colourful identities given his working class upbringing.

"You go to the footy one day, you go to the races, go to the opera you'll meet people from all walks of life," McGuire told Triple M's The Hot Breakfast today.

"So from my point of view as long as Swanny is walking the tightrope correctly, so long as he informs people what's going on, so long as he doesn't get himself into trouble then I don't see to much of a problem with this situation."

McGuire, who was speaking from Italy, said he'll have a chat with Swan about the photos.

"I'm not being flippant about it, I'll talk to Swanny when I get back or when he gets up this morning at some stage just to check out exactly what's going on," McGuire said.

Gatto told ABC Radio that "there's nothing in it".

"I wasn't an organiser, nothing to do with me at all," he told broadcaster Jon Faine.

"I went there and bought a table. I filled the table with elderly friends of mine, non-underworld figures. We listened to Swanny talk about football and had an auction and that was it."

Gatto said he had "no idea" how much Swan was paid for the event.

"I go to these sportsmen nights all the time. Most of the football players that speak at them they come over and say hello. There is nothing in it.

"Dane Swan is a real champion of a man, he has spent time with elderly people and with children. He came over briefly and said hello to me, I asked him for a photo and that was it.

"I can't understand why the carry on with all this nonsense. There is never a problem until the media makes it a problem."

Hinkley confident Port is up to speed

PORT Adelaide is confident it has made up the head-start given to its rivals after last year's finals appearance forced a delayed start to pre-season.

Coach Ken Hinkley said yesterday's impressive 3km time-trial times were "confirmation" his players were determined not to let their work ethic drop off, and their December training camp to Dubai was a success.

BEST 22s: Port aims higher, Crows bounce back

"It's confirmation that physically we're in good shape and we now give ourselves a chance to really attack January knowing we've got some miles in our legs. The camp to Dubai and all those things have been really positive because we're getting times as good as we were getting last year, and in a lot of cases better," he said.

"That was the importance of Dubai for us, we physically knew we went there to try to catch up a little bit of ground."

But despite the delayed start to summer, Hinkley said his players must still improve on last year's fitness levels.

"We know we're 12 months advanced, so to say we're going to catch up - if we run the same times we ran last year we probably haven't caught up anything," he said.

"We need to make sure we improve and our times today suggest we've improved in our running ability, so that puts us in a positive for the start of January.

Speaking yesterday as training resumed after the Christmas break, Hinkley:

PRAISED the performance of Jake Neade, who won the first of two waves in yesterday's time trial.

CONFIRMED he would stick with his defence-first mantra in 2014.

"I said last year 'as long as we set up really strong defensively, restrict sides, our brave use of the ball going forward will give us a chance in every game we play in'."

DESCRIBED Brisbane recruit Jared Polec's effort in slicing more than one minute off his previous time around the course as "outstanding".

"I think some people thought we were joking when we said he was crook on the first day (of pre-season) but he actually was crook. He'd had tonselitistonsillitis, so to make up a significant amount of time, that's impressive, but he also did have some health issues that were holding him back.

"He's embraced the training methods we want to enforce at Port Adelaide and really had a crack at them.

"He's fit and that's not a reflection of where he's come from or anything, it's a reflection that he's physically in good shape for the first time in three years and that gives him a chance to complete more sessions, and when you complete more sessions you get better times, it's a simple message."

The truth about meditation

WE HOPE learning to meditate wasn't one of your new year's resolutions. A study has found that there is little to no evidence of mindfulness meditation's impact on positive mood, attention, substance use, eating habits, sleep and weight.

Reid returns to the Bombers

Essendon doctor Bruce Reid leaves AFL House last year. Source: News Limited

ESSENDON doctor Bruce Reid is back at work after a three-month leave period that followed the AFL's dismissal of misconduct charges against him over the supplements saga.

The league dropped charges against Reid in September after he applied to the Supreme Court to have his case heard by a body independent of the AFL Commission.

LIVE CHAT: AFL PREDICTIONS - DONS TO MISS FINALS?

The commission had earlier dealt penalties to the club and three other officials - coach James Hird, assistant coach Mark Thompson and football boss Danny Corcoran - for governance failings related to the 2012 supplements program.

A joint statement between Reid and the league that said "Dr Reid will take leave and will return to the club in January 2014" prompted reports that Reid's leave was an informal punishment.

Asked on radio if that was the case, AFL boss Andrew Demetriou said at the time: "You can interpret that any way you want".

In December, Essendon announced Corcoran would not return to the club while Hird remains suspended until late August. Thompson is coaching the side in his absence.

Getting back to business yesterday, Reid told the club's website that star midfielder Brendon Goddard would likely resume full training next week as he recovered from a calf strain.

"He is now running really well at top speed and he is at four and a half weeks (since the injury) so he will be in full training after six weeks," Reid said

"All of the list will be in full training, there is a couple of shoulder reconstruction's from the off-season that we will keep out of full contact.

"The important thing is they are all out on the track, there is no one now that is not back in full training."

"We are very happy with our injury situation at the moment as we were last year at the same time of year."
