WALKING into a new club for the first time can be confronting, but spare a thought for Tom Hickey.

Hickey was rapt to secure a move from Gold Coast to St Kilda in the trade period. But as the promising 21-year-old explained today, one of the first things he had to do was clear the air with his new ruck partner Ben McEvoy.

St Kilda's new tandem act had a run-in early last season. If that wasn't awkward enough, when the sides met again in Round 11 Hickey's direct opponent, Jason Blake, broke his Brownlow duck after 12-and-a-half voteless seasons.

"Actually, I remember copping a bit of a spray (from McEvoy) in Round 2 after he sort of schooled me a bit,'' Hickey said.

"I actually brought it up with him to get it out of the way. I brought that up and also Jason Blake got his first votes against me as well, so I thought I'd get it all out there.

"It's all a bit of cheeky banter.''

Pick Me: The Saints like the next Jeremy Cameron

Hickey was joined at Seaford by fellow off-season captures Tom Lee and Trent Dennis-Lane.

Lee, who was on Adelaide's list in 2009, has matured into an agile 195cm forward capable of the spectacular, while Dennis-Lane arrives from Sydney after injuries curtailed his early promise.

He is looking forward to more opportunities.

"Obviously, any team that wins a flag doesn't have many injuries and doesn't play that many players … at the end of the year the opportunity arose … and I couldn't pass up this opportunity," Dennis-Lane said.

St Kilda gave up picks 12 and 13 in the national draft for Lee and Hickey, but Saints coach Scott Watters said he expected both to be decade-long players after admiring their development from a distance.

Meanwhile, veteran midfielder Lenny Hayes joined teammates for training today after recovering from post-season heart surgery.

Watters said Hayes was on a modified program but he would join teammates for their high-altitude training camp in Colorado at the end of the month.
