THE Adelaide Crows have met with lawyers over reports that captain Nathan van Berlo has become embroiled in the club's salary cap scandal.
Adelaide could face further penalties over a deal set up for van Berlo that may breach the AFL's total player payment rules, according to reports last night in a Melbourne newspaper.
But van Berlo's manager Colin Young said on his SportsNewsFirst website this morning that it was "ridiculous" to believe any other Adelaide player has a contract similar to Tippett's.
"Nathan van Berlo is certainly not embroiled in the Kurt Tippett contract dispute with the AFL. I can assure anybody of that," Young said.
"I spoke with Nathan late into Thursday night about this rubbish that has been written regarding his contract.
"He is pretty disillusioned with an industry that can do what is going on away from the playing field and the football side of the AFL right at the moment.
"It's an absolute disgrace that somebody can write a beat up like this and connect Nathan van Berlo to anything deceitful."
Earlier this morning, the Adelaide Football Club tweeted: "Crows fans, all we can say at the moment is don't jump to conclusions."
The Crows declined to comment on reports that McMahon Services paid full-forward Kurt Tippett $20,000 to $30,000 a year for two years, while club sponsor Amcor Packaging was also approached regarding a third-party deal.
It is understood the Crows board has asked chief executive officer Steven Trigg several times if anything further will emerge from the Tippett investigation and, each time, has been told there is nothing and this has been believed by the board.
It is further understood nothing regarding third-party payments to van Berlo has been mentioned at board level.
A club spokesman said the club would not be commenting until the investigation process had concluded. The claims come as the Crows prepare to fly to Melbourne for their defence of salary cap breaches and draft tampering.
It's understood Adelaide is working with lawyers to construct a detailed chronology of events for its defence.
The Crows face three charges, CEO Steven Trigg faces three, Tippett two, former football manager John Reid two and football manager Phil Harper one charge.
It comes as Adelaide prepares a list of potential key witnesses to fly to Melbourne for its defence of 11 charges of salary cap breaches and draft tampering.
The AFL confirmed witnesses would be allowed provided the commission was notified and they were relevant to the charges.
The club was tight-lipped yesterday, other than to release a statement to key stakeholders that said in part: "We look forward to the hearing next Monday and then being able to explain directly to you and all our members, sponsors and supporters ... exactly what happened, why it happened and how it happened.''
