PORT Adelaide will today introduce former Swan Matthew Nicks as the Power's defensive coach to fill the void left by Brad Gotch.

Nicks, 37, has been a development coach at Alberton for the past two seasons and has impressed with his tactical nous.

He would know that area; as a backman he played 175 games with the Swans after being taken from West Adelaide in the 1994 draft.

Nicks takes the job on the senior coaching panel with Gotch being shifted back to Melbourne in a full-time opposition scouting role for the Power.

The other assistant coaching roles will remain the same for next year; Shaun Rehn and Josh Carr will look after the midfield, Geelong great Garry "Buddha" Hocking will continue with the forwards and incoming senior assistant coach Alan Richardson will play a broader, strategic role.

Nicks's place in the development area will be taken up by Stuart Cochrane, who will work there alongside former Crow Tyson Edward and ex-Saint Daniel Healy.

Senior coach Ken Hinkley, who is embarking on his first pre-season after replacing Matthew Primus, spoke highly of Nicks after the call was made. A key consideration was that Nicks was familiar with the players after his time at the club.

"That really helps when we're such a young group and certainly the knowledge he has of those young players will help them become better players and be part of a better team," Hinkley said.

"Matthew has had three years working with the majority of the boys that he will work in the back half, but he will also be helping our young forwards and the midfielders learn about defence as well.

"He's really good with all his tactical stuff and all his presentation work that he does for the boys.

"He's very clear and he educates and teaches really well, which is a real positive.

"He is really passionate about defence coming from the Sydney background and already he's showing the way with that stuff for all of our players and coaches.

"He has a determination to succeed and work for the team which again is that Sydney mentality, where it's all about the team and what the individual can do to work for everyone else."
