ADELAIDE will be armed with two "live" selections at tomorrow's AFL national draft after dumped Nick Joyce yesterday withdrew his draft nomination.

In a move designed to make room for the Crows to have another key pick and make Joyce's passage back to Adelaide easier, Joyce pulled out of the national draft pool to nominate for next month's pre-season draft.

His surprise decision came after talks with the Crows, his manager Ben Williams, and the AFL Players' Association.

The move is a big win for Adelaide, which until last Friday looked like it could be banned from tomorrow's draft because of the Kurt Tippett salary cap scandal.

Now it can use selections 20 and 54 on young talent and its final pick (No. 64) to upgrade former mature-age rookie Ian Callinan to its senior list.

"It puts us in a better position, no doubt," Crows list manager David Noble said.

"And hopefully it will make us easier to re-draft Nick, who we have made a commitment to."

Second-year midfielder Joyce, 19, was the Adelaide fall guy as the club was forced to cut a contracted player before the draft as Tippett remained on its list while AFL investigations into his controversial 2009 contract with the Crows continued.

After talks with the AFLPA, Adelaide expects Tippett to be able to come off its list before the December 11 pre-season draft, enabling it to free-up a spot to re-draft Joyce. By entering the pre-season draft, Joyce limits the number of rival clubs that can claim him.

Usually only eight or nine of the 18 clubs take part in the pre-season lottery.

"We felt it was our best way of assuring that Nick ends up going back to Adelaide," Williams said.

"The club has made an iron-clad agreement to re-draft him but if you're in the national draft then you're at the mercy of being picked up by another club.

"The Crows had intended to take him at pick 54 but it's a fair way down the pecking order. Nick wanted to improve his chances of staying at Adelaide so we thought the pre-season draft was the best option."

Williams said being delisted, albeit temporarily, had been tough for Woodville-West Torrens product Joyce.

"It has been a tough time for him because he was contracted and he's a Crows fan who wants to continue playing for the club," he said, adding rival clubs had expressed empathy for Joyce's plight and would likely let the Crows re-draft himnte.

"Nick's trying to make the best of a bad situation and do what he can to get back on the list while also helping the club at the draft.

"But he's a mature, level-headed young kid who has handled the whole situation remarkably well."

Recruited by Adelaide with pick 46 at last year's national meet, Joyce is continuing to train with the club, starring on the track during Monday's opening pre-season session.
