NICK Riewoldt admits it will be strange playing against his former teammate Brendon Goddard next year, but says he will be "mates with 'BJ' for life".
And the Saints captain has urged the club's fans to treat Goddard with the respect he deserves when he steps out for Essendon against St Kilda in Round 4.
"It will be tough (playing against him)... 'BJ' was one of my groomsmen and he will be a mate of mine forever," Riewoldt said. "At the end of the day, the two parties couldn't come together and that's unfortunate.
"I would've loved him to have still been at St Kilda. The fact is he isn't there any more. That's just a part of footy."
Asked if he expects the gloves to be off when Goddard meets his old side next year, Riewoldt laughed and said: "Exactly."
"I think we had (former coach) 'Rossy' (Lyon) in Round 4 this year; and it's funny how it has worked out to be 'BJ' in Round 4 next year," he said.

"The fact is that he is a 200-game player and a life member of the club, so hopefully there will be that healthy level of respect. I'm sure there will be."
Riewoldt said he did not want to go into the reasons for his mate's departure, but he can understand why coach Scott Watters stood up for the club throughout the process of Goddard's move.
"Scotty always supports the players and the club, and that's one of the great things about him," he said. "You absolutely know where you stand with him, and that's great."
