THE AFL won't be pushing clubs to employ full-time doctors despite demanding they be given greater authority and acknowledging it's becoming harder to drag part-timers from private practice.
The league today announced a new two-year fellowship program, in which medical practitioners will be trained to work either in the AFL or a second-tier league.
AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said fears of litigation and a reduction in income associated with spending time away from their own practices was making it harder to attract the best medical talent.
"Unfortunately, particularly with the demands of AFL football, we've seen some very fine practitioners leave the game," Demetriou said.
More retirements are expected in the next few years.
"It's becoming harder and harder, particularly with the competition with other codes, to attract fine sports practitioners," he said.
The AFL plans to give doctors more responsibility, in response to the performance-enhancing drug threat, highlighted by the current ASADA investigation into Essendon.
"We will see the doctors at football clubs having total control and authority over the medical practices at a club," Demetriou said.
But he said there was no reason that couldn't occur under the current part-time model and he was confident the new fellowship program would ensure expected retirees could be replaced.
"I don't think it's necessary to move to full-time doctors," Demetriou said.
"I think what's most important is we get the best medical practitioners working in our game."
Demetriou also launched a program, Sports Medicall, to provide footballers at community level quicker access to sports medical treatment, initially via phone consultation.
