GREATER Western Sydney chief executive David Matthews has not ruled out a multi-million play for Lance Franklin.
Matthews yesterday endorsed coach Kevin Sheedy's desire for Franklin, but said the Giants were still to decide whether to chase the Hawthorn superstar.
Franklin is a free agent at the end of the season and GWS and Fremantle are the two clubs most likely to pry him from Hawthorn if he chooses to change clubs.
Suns' success could come down to Hunt
Port Adelaide, which also had Franklin on its hit list, softened its stance yesterday, saying it believed Franklin would remain a Hawthorn player.
Sheedy, who steps down as coach of GWS at the end this year, said he would pay Hawks superstar up to $1.3 million a year.
"If it was my advice and it was on the table, I would say go after him," Sheedy said on Fox Footy's AFL 360 on Monday.
Matthews yesterday did not downplay his club's interest in Franklin, but said the club needed to have internal discussions and talks with Franklin's manager, Liam Pickering.
"Sheeds was really saying what every AFL coach should say, which is that every club would want Lance Franklin. Why wouldn't you?" Matthews said.
"He talked about the Sydney market because of the history of big-name recruits like (Tony) Lockett who have made an impact, (and) Franklin would be one of the few AFL players outside of the Swans or Giants who would be recognisable at this stage.
"That said, we don't have a firm view on our recruiting strategy for 2014.
"Stephen Silvagni (list manager) will work through our list and other lists and bring us some recommendations in due course."
It's understood the Giants have the ability to pay Franklin between $1.3 million and $1.5 million a season.
The Giants will reap bumper salary cap concessions of up to $1 million
a season for the next six years -- plus the same contentious cost-of-living allowance afforded to the Sydney Swans, worth $895,000 this year.
They do, however, have more players on their list who already command huge salaries, such as Tom Scully, Phil Davis and Callan Ward.
Dockers chief executive Steve Rosich confirmed the club would again be aggressive in free agency.
But while Fremantle seems a natural fit for Franklin, given their sole power forward Matthew Pavlich is 32 this year, Rosich said the Dockers still believed he would stay at Hawthorn.
"We understand where he sits in the competition, but clearly a player of that calibre is favoured to stay at his current club," he said.
Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley said yesterday the Power was interested, but "I think you'll find Buddy will probably stay at Hawthorn".
