WEST Coast defender Mitch Brown approached a fork-in-the-road moment last year, but in the end it wasn't his choice which path he took.
On the one hand, Brown loved being at the Eagles, and was desperate to play a big part in their AFL future.
But with Darren Glass, Eric Mackenzie and Will Schofield sitting above him in the defensive pecking order, Brown knew he would struggle for opportunities in 2013 if he stayed.
At 24 years of age and entering the prime of his career, Brown made the tough decision to leave, and requested a trade to St Kilda.
However, West Coast denied his request, forcing Brown to see out the final year of his contract.
The situation had the potential to become an awkward partnership.
But Brown says he holds no animosity towards the Eagles, and hinted he would consider signing a contract extension at the end of the year.
With skipper Glass entering the twilight of his career, opportunities are set to open up for Brown in the future.
The 195cm Victorian, who has played just 53 games over six seasons with the Eagles, said he wasn't shattered when his requested trade to St Kilda never eventuated.
"I wasn't upset at all," Brown said.
"It's strange the way it sounds. I spoke to Woosh (coach John Worsfold) that night after it ended and said, 'I am committed 110 per cent no matter what'. That's just the way I am.
"I don't find any worth on dwelling on something I can't control any more."
Brown laughed off rumours St Kilda had offered him a $600,000 deal to come their way.
"I wish. It's never about the money," he said.
"For me to take the next step in football is to play regular football and that was the only reason."
A hamstring injury to Mackenzie saw Brown thrust into the heart of defence for the Round 2 clash with Hawthorn and last Saturday's win over Melbourne.
But with Mackenzie considered a strong chance to return against Carlton for Saturday night's clash in Perth, Brown is set to be relegated to the WAFL once again.
"Anyone's role when they get dropped is to go back to the WAFL and play the best footy they can, so I'm not going to be negative about it at all," Brown said.
