HAWTHORN recruit defender Brian Lake and 2012 AFL grand final midfielder Shane Savage were two of the trump cards for the Box Hill Hawks in an upset 11-point win over Essendon in yesterday's VFL match at Windy Hill.
A crowd of more than 5000 - mainly Bombers fans proudly wearing team colours - filled the grandstands and along the boundary line in a show of solidarity after the club's momentous Friday night win over the Fremantle Dockers in Perth.
But they went home disappointed.
Trailing by 14-points at halftime, Box Hill lifted the tempo with a seven-goal third quarter to seal a rare victory at the stadium.
Lake, 31, playing his second game with Box Hill after recovering from a thigh injury, had 20 touches (14 kicks, six handballs) and took eight marks.
Savage, 22, had 22 disposals, eight marks, five inside 50s and two goals.
Both lodged claims for inclusion in the Hawthorn side for Saturday's AFL match against Fremantle at Aurora Stadium.
Box Hill contributors included Jon Simpkin (20 disposals), Kyle Cheney (19), Michael Osborne (17), and dominant talls Luke Lowden (23 hitouts) and John Ceglar (22 tapouts) after the Bombers lost veteran ruckman David Hille with injury before the match.
Box Hill coach Damian Carroll said Savage was a quality player: "He played in last year's AFL Grand Final, and he started to get energy at the ball in the second half and his kicks were long."
Carroll also praised former Collingwood VFL player Tom Gordon, who kicked four goals.
Essendon VFL coach Hayden Skipworth said tall forwards Scott Gumbleton, 12 touches, six marks. one goal and two behinds, and 18-year-old Joe Daniher, 12 disposals and eight marks, could step up if Michael Hurley's wrist injury sidelined him for Saturday's match against St Kilda.
"There has been a lot of hype around Daniher, and we have tried to play it down a bit," Skipworth said.
Leroy Jetta with 26 disposals, defender Tayte Pears (19) and Nathan Lovett-Murray (18) were Essendon's best.
Western Bulldogs prized 18-year-old TAC Cup recruits Jake Stringer and Jack Macrae helped Williamstown score a 100-point win over the Coburg Lions at the Burbank Oval.
The Coburg side had 16 Richmond AFL-listed players, but they could not stop Stringer - the Bulldogs 2012 NAB AFL draft 1st round No.5 selection - who kicked 5.1 from 12 possessions and six marks to be best on ground.
Stringer said his immediate ambition was to get a place in the Bulldogs side.
Today's games: Geelong v Sandringham, 1pm at Simonds Stadium; Frankston v Port Melbourne, 2pm, Frankston Oval
