OLLIE Wines has surged into outright favouritism for this year's AFL Rising Star Award after another standout performance in Port Adelaide's Showdown win.

The Power youngster went head-to-head with dual reigning Crows best and fairest Scott Thompson for much of the game and held his own by gathering 25 disposals, making five tackles and kicking two goals.

The performance saw punters back Wines from $5 into $2.75 with bookmaker sportsbet.com.au, past Gold Coast's Jaeger O'Meara - who remained steady at $4.50 - and Melbourne's Jack Viney, who moved from $5 out to $5.50.

Crows midfielder Brad Crouch is on the sixth line of betting after drifting from $9 out to $12.

Wines was paying $21 when betting opened but moved into $9 before round one after a standout preseason.

He dropped to $6 after a brilliant performance in the season-opener against Melbourne and is on track to join Danyle Pearce (2006) and Michael Wilson (1997) on Port Adelaide's list of Rising Star winners.

One punter stands to collect $6400 if Wines claims the award after investing $400 when he was paying $16.

Since Pearce, Port has had seven nominees for the award - Robbie Gray, Justin Westhoff and Travis Boak (2007), Alipate Carlile (2008), Jackson Trengove (2010), Jasper Pittard (2011) and Chad Wingard (2012).

But Westhoff (fourth behind Joel Selwood, Scott Pendlebury and Nathan Jones) is the only one to feature prominently in the final voting.

Port's three game winning streak to begin the season isn't prompting punters to back any of its players for the Brownlow Medal.

Early season revelation Justin Westhoff is the shortest priced Power player at $67, while Showdown Medallist Travis Boak and midfield partner Hamish Hartlett are rank outsiders at $81.

Crows pair Patrick Dangerfield (seventh favourite at $14) and Scott Thompson (13th at $26) are still highly rated despite their team's disappointing 1-2 start.
