Wright, Kerridge tagged for role

THE tagging duties performed by Crows captain Nathan van Berlo are now likely to fall to Matthew Wright or Sam Kerridge, who have handled the job in the past but midfield coach Scott Camporeale had an open mind should others put their hands up.

The loss of van Berlo with knee bruising has not only left a gap in leadership and run but it has also robbed the Crows of their most accomplished run-with player.

The first assignment for a negating midfielder is Western Bulldog Ryan Griffen on Sunday.

"He is good at it, VB, absolutely," Camporeale said. "But Wright's done it previously on a few and done some really good jobs for us. Kerridge could possibly do it, (Richard) Douglas can do it. But we can't just rely on that. We've got to be better across the board in terms of attacking and defending, no matter who we're playing."

Camporeale said there was enough midfield talent to draw from without having to raid players from other lines, such as bringing in Ian Callinan from the forward line. Players such as Tom Lynch, Jarryd Lyons, Kerridge, Aidan Riley, Rory Laird and Brodie Martin are on the brink of selection and have impressed in the SANFL.

One of the greatest midfield dilemmas for Adelaide is how to best prepare those on the fringe, with Camporeale noticing a widening gap between the state leagues and the AFL.

There is also the difference in approach, which is central to the Crows' argument to have their own reserves side so that players can be coached to the same system as those who pull on an AFL jumper.

But he said when players were promoted "they're in form and really confident and normally adapt really well".
