BRISBANE rookie Sam Mayes will be thrown in the deep end for his senior debut with the teenager set to taste AFL football for the first time in Saturday night's Q Clash against the Gold Coast at Metrcion Stadium.
The 18-year-old is one of three changes the Lions have made for the Sunshine State stoush with Mayes, midfielder Jared Polec and Irishman Niall McKeever replacing Claye Beams (knee), Patrick Karnezis (omitted) and Ryan Lester (omitted).
The Gold Coast have made two changes to the side defeated by Sydney last weekend with Greg Broughton and Jackson Allen replacing Tom Murphy (shoulder) and Dion Prestia (hip).
Mayes was taken by Brisbane at pick no.8 in last year's draft and arrived at the Gabba with a big reputation after being a standout at North Adelaide.
A niggling groin injury hampered his pre-season but the medium-sized forward with elite kicking skills fought his way back to be an emergency for last week's loss to Adelaide.
Fellow South Australian Polec gets the chance to add to his 15 senior games after being the no.5 selection in the 2010 draft. Polec played 12 senior games last year but has struggled to have an impact since joining Brisbane.
McKeever has spent his formative years as a defender but joined the Lions forward group over summer and is set to be a foil for co-captain Jonathan Brown.
